The Port of Itaqui has once again been recognized as a national benchmark, winning two categories at the 2024 ANTAQ Awards: Environmental Performance Index (EPI) and Regulatory Compliance. The award ceremony took place on Tuesday (26) in Brasília, gathering key representatives from Brazil’s waterway transportation sector.
For the second consecutive year, the Port of Itaqui earned recognition for its environmental performance, taking second place in the EPI category. The EPI is the leading tool for assessing environmental management in port facilities, evaluating 38 indicators across economic-operational, sociocultural, physicochemical, and biological-ecological aspects. This accolade underscores Itaqui’s commitment to environmental best practices, regulatory compliance, and sustainability.
Additionally, the port secured third place in the Regulatory Compliance category, which measures strict adherence to regulations set by the National Waterway Transportation Agency (ANTAQ). This award, determined automatically, is granted to organizations demonstrating high compliance levels based on infraction risk analyses and the absence of finalized administrative rulings.
Recognizing Sustainability and Governance Excellence
The ANTAQ Awards, established in 2016, aim to spotlight excellence in the waterway transportation sector, celebrating outstanding service to society. The initiative also promotes technical and scientific advancements and the adoption of ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) principles within the port industry.
Hibernon Marinho, Operations Director at the Port of Itaqui, highlighted the significance of the EPI recognition: “Securing first place in the Environmental Performance Index for the second year in a row reflects our commitment to sustainability and environmental preservation, aligned with the highest standards of port management,” Marinho stated.
Rita de Cássia, Regulation Coordinator, emphasized the importance of the Regulatory Compliance award: “This recognition underscores our dedication to upholding the standards that ensure safety, efficiency, and consistency in port operations—key pillars for the sector’s development,” she noted.
Bruno Mota, Planning Director, stressed the national impact of these achievements: “The Port of Itaqui continues to lead the way in the North Arc region, solidifying its position as the Port of Development, delivering value to Brazil and driving innovation in port operations and management.”
