The Port of Itaguaí is preparing for a historic milestone by leasing the ITG02 area, where a new mineral terminal will be established. The Auction Notice (Auction No. 09/2024) was published by the National Waterway Transportation Agency (ANTAQ) in the Official Gazette on Thursday (24). The auction, scheduled for December 18, will take place at B3 in São Paulo and is part of the largest package of port leases promoted by the Federal Government in this administration. This project is considered the most significant for PortosRio and one of the critical initiatives for Brazil’s foreign trade.
The ITG02 area, covering 348,937 square meters, will be developed into a terminal specialized in handling and storing solid mineral bulk. The winning bidder is expected to invest over BRL 3.5 billion in the future facility, which will have the capacity to handle approximately 20 million tonnes per year. The new terminal will solidify the Port of Itaguaí as Brazil’s main iron ore export hub.
Francisco Martins, president of PortosRio, highlighted the project’s transformative impact: “The ITG02 area will be crucial to expanding the port infrastructure in Rio de Janeiro and ensuring the flow of iron ore production from Minas Gerais. This terminal will not only significantly increase the handling capacity of the Port of Itaguaí but also serve as a driver of socioeconomic development for the region, creating thousands of jobs and boosting tax revenue. Additionally, the Port Authority has taken all necessary measures to ensure the future lessee implements sustainable practices, making this project an example of efficiency and environmental responsibility. We are focused on modernizing our ports and ensuring their global competitiveness while promoting sustainable growth for the state and Brazil.”
The Technical, Economic, and Environmental Feasibility Study (EVTEA) indicates that approximately 2,800 indirect jobs will be generated during the terminal’s construction, and another 2,000 direct and indirect jobs will be created during its operation. Additionally, the municipality of Itaguaí could collect up to BRL 1.2 billion in Service Tax (ISS) over the 35-year contract.
The project will also adhere to strict eco-efficiency standards, with measures for the rational use of natural resources and control of particulate emissions. Planned actions include proper ore storage, the use of environmental control equipment, and continuous monitoring to minimize environmental impacts.
