Fertilizer Deliveries in Brazil Decreased in September

As of September this year, fertilizer deliveries in Brazil showed a 1.8% decrease compared to the same period in 2023. The total delivered volume was 32.88 million tons, down from 33.5 million tons last year, according to data released by the National Association for the Diffusion of Fertilizers (Anda). Despite the decline, the association assured that the market is “fully supplied,” emphasizing the natural seasonality of demand in the agricultural sector.

In September, deliveries totaled 4.85 million tons, representing a 0.8% decrease compared to the same month in 2023, when 4.89 million tons were delivered.

Mato Grosso remained the country’s most significant contributor to fertilizer deliveries, accounting for 20.5% of the total volume, equivalent to 6.75 million tons. Other states with the highest delivery volumes were Paraná, Rio Grande do Sul, and São Paulo, with 3.79 million, 3.62 million, and 3.61 million tons, respectively.

On the other hand, the national production of intermediate fertilizers showed growth both in September and in the year-to-date totals. In September, production was 692,000 tons, an increase of 11.8% compared to the same month in 2023. Year-to-date, production totaled 5.32 million tons, representing a 6.8% increase compared to last year, when the total was 4.99 million tons.

Imports also followed an upward trend. In September, Brazil imported 4.22 million tons of intermediate fertilizers, a 6.7% increase compared to the same month in 2023. From January to September, imports totaled 29.05 million tons, a 5.4% increase compared to last year, when the total was 27.57 million tons.

The Port of Paranaguá, Brazil’s main entry point for fertilizers, recorded an 8% increase in imports, with 7.3 million tons unloaded from January to September, compared to 6.76 million in 2023. According to data from Siacesp/MDIC, this volume represented 25.1% of the total imported through all ports in the country.
