Brazil: Containerized Cargo Throughput Rises in October

Containerized cargo throughput in Brazil grew by 9.66% in October this year, according to data from Antaq’s Waterborne Statistics report by the National Waterway Transportation Agency (ANTAQ).
Including all types of cargo, Brazil’s port sector handled 107.3 million tons of cargo in October 2024, a slight decrease of 3.32%. However, year-to-date volumes reached 1.1 billion tons, representing a growth of 2.25%. In October, the cargo categories with the highest percentage increases were soybean oil extraction residues (+35.41%), sugar (+32.64%), and coal (+27.75%).
Containerized cargo handling reached 12.1 million tons in October, equivalent to 1.1 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units), an increase of 11.64%. Of this total, 0.8 million TEUs were handled in long-haul trade, while 0.3 million TEUs were moved through cabotage. General cargo totaled 5.0 million tons in October 2024, dry bulk reached 64.4 million tons, and liquid bulk amounted to 25.8 million tons. Long-haul cargo volumes were 80.9 million tons for the month, cabotage handled 22.4 million tons, and inland navigation accounted for 3.9 million tons.
Public ports moved 39.6 million tons in October 2024, marking an increase of 0.53% compared to last year. Among the country’s top 10 busiest ports, the Port of Vila do Conde showed the highest monthly growth, handling 1.6 million tons, a 37.37% increase compared to October 2023.

Authorized private terminals handled 67.7 million tons of cargo, a 5.43% drop compared to October of the previous year. Among the top 10 private-use terminals (TUPs), the Port Terminal of Pecém (CE) stood out with a 29.26% growth, handling 1.7 million tons of cargo.
