Manufacturing Industry Exports Rise 35.4% in Rio Grande do Sul

With a 20.3% increase in shipped volume and a 12.6% rise in average prices, November saw exports from Rio Grande do Sul’s manufacturing industry reach US$1.6 billion, a growth of 35.4% (US$424.1 million) compared to the same month in 2023. This marks the third consecutive year-over-year increase in 2024.
“Of the 23 exporting sectors, 19 recorded higher sales to the international market, signaling a gradual recovery in the sector following the floods,” noted Claudio Bier, president of Fiergs (Federation of Industries of the State of Rio Grande do Sul).
However, the year-to-date performance remains negative, with a 2.6% drop in revenue and a 3.1% decrease in shipped volume compared to last year.
Key Segments
According to data released by the Secretariat of Foreign Trade of the Ministry of Development, Industry, Trade, and Services, the Food segment led the state’s exports in November, totaling US$541.3 million, an increase of US$172.6 million (+46.8%) compared to November 2023. This growth was primarily driven by a 34.9% increase in average prices, although shipped volume rose 8.8%.
Crude Vegetable Oils: Revenue of US$ 202.5 million (+US$ 109.2 million), with most exports destined for India.
Poultry Slaughter: Revenue of US$ 133 million (+US$ 30 million), with the United Arab Emirates as the leading destination.
Despite the strong performance in November, the Food segment has accumulated an 11.9% drop in revenue and a 16.3% decrease in shipped volume from January to November.
Tobacco, the second-largest exporting segment, earned US$356.9 million in November, a sharp 155.7% increase (+US$217.3 million) compared to the same month in 2023. Meanwhile, in third place, the Chemical segment posted US$107.3 million in revenue, a 4.1% decline (-US$4.6 million) during the same period.
Imports
Rio Grande do Sul imported US$1.1 billion worth of goods in November, a 12.5% increase (+US$125 million) compared to November 2023. Approximately 31.8% of imports were concentrated in the Motor Vehicles segment, which totaled US$293.1 million (+61.6% or +US$111.7 million).
Purchases in this segment were mainly composed of:
Automobiles, pickup trucks, and utility vehicles: US$228.1 million (+US$95.9 million), primarily imported from Argentina.
Chassis with engines for automobiles, pickup trucks, and utility vehicles: US$ 23.5 million (+US$ 17.2 million), also sourced from Argentina.
Year-to-date, the state’s total imports have fallen 6.6% through November.
