Amazonas Imports Surpass Exports by 20 Times in November

According to state trade balance data, in November, imports to the state of Amazonas totaled 20 times greater than exports.

Sedecti (State Secretariat of Economic Development, Science, Technology, and Innovation) reported that the Amazonas recorded exports of USD 63.64 million and imports of USD 1.22 billion. The secretariat highlighted that most imports consist of inputs to supply the Manaus Free Trade Zone and local commerce.

China remained the main destination market for Amazonas products in November. The primary exported product was ferroniobium, totaling USD 11.74 million and accounting for 90.86% of exports to the Asian country. Ferroniobium is produced in Presidente Figueiredo, a municipality 119 km from Manaus, by Mineração Taboca, which a Chinese group recently acquired.

Bolivia ranked second among the destinations for exports from Amazonas, with a total of USD 8.19 million, of which 99.26% were other food preparations.

Imports Led by China and the United States

On the import side, China was once again the leading supplier, with “other recorded media” as the highlight, totaling USD 62.59 million, equivalent to 11.45% of total external purchases.

The United States ranked second, exporting USD 49.71 million in petroleum oils or bituminous mineral derivatives to Amazonas, representing 41.53% of that country’s imports.

Regional Highlights

Presidente Figueiredo led exports for the third consecutive month, reaching USD 11.74 million among the municipalities of Amazonas. Ferroalloys were the primary product shipped to China. Itacoatiara ranked second, registering USD 219,250 in sawn wood exports to the Netherlands.

In terms of imports, Itacoatiara also stood out, with USD 23.07 million in petroleum oils or bituminous mineral derivatives from Russia. Meanwhile, the municipality of Tefé imported USD 89,320 worth of instruments and apparatus for physical or chemical analysis originating from the United States.

“Despite climate challenges, we continued to import essential inputs to supply the Manaus Free Trade Zone and export our products to international markets,” said Sedecti Secretary Serafim Corrêa. He predicts that 2024 will close with better results compared to previous years.
