Authorities Probe Worker Death at Port of Santos

The São Paulo Port Captaincy is investigating the death of a 49-year-old longshoreman, who was crushed by a load of timber at the Port of Santos on January 2nd.

When the accident occurred, Cláudio Roberto do Nascimento was working aboard the vessel Aegean Spirit, which was docked at the port. Nascimento fell into the ship’s hold after being struck by the load. He was rescued but was already deceased.

The Criminalistics Institute investigated the scene and is also looking into the case.

According to the G1 news portal, Nascimento had been performing this role for two years and worked with wood products when the accident occurred.

The victim was rescued by a private emergency service and taken to the Central UPA of Santos but without vital signs. According to the Navy, the Port Captaincy has opened an administrative inquiry to determine the cause of the accident.

According to the Fire Department, 17 agents were dispatched to attend to the incident involving six vehicles.

In a statement sent to the press, the São Paulo State Department of Public Security confirmed that the case had been recorded as a suspicious death. The 2nd Police District of the city will investigate the accident.
