Brazil Faces $469 Mln Loss from Coffee Shipment Delays, Says Cecafé

Delays in the shipment of products slated for export have left 1.615 million bags of coffee stranded at Brazilian ports, according to a report by the Brazilian Coffee Exporters Council (Cecafé).

In November alone, these delays resulted in “port-related losses” totaling R$11.93 million. Cecafé’s estimate includes expenses such as additional storage fees, container detention charges, pre-stacking costs, and early gate openings.

Among the issues causing the delays, the organization highlighted vessel schedule changes and cargo rollovers as key factors.

“The logistical bottlenecks and accumulated losses experienced by our exporters reveal that Brazil’s top coffee-exporting ports, along with others serving the container sector, have failed to keep pace with the country’s agribusiness sector growth. The lack of adequate port infrastructure is glaring,” said Eduardo Heron, Cecafé’s technical director.

“There is an urgent need for expanded yard and berth capacity, improved road, rail, and waterway connections to support Brazilian agribusiness, and greater dredging efforts to accommodate larger vessels,” Heron added.

He noted that Cecafé is engaging with trade partners, government authorities, and industry stakeholders to seek solutions to reduce losses for exporters and improve port infrastructure efficiency.

“Brazil’s port infrastructure is showing signs of strain, and there is an urgent need to expand investments and adopt measures to meet the growing demands of the national agribusiness sector. Enhancing efficiency and competitiveness is critical to ensuring that one of the country’s key economic segments continues generating billions in revenue,” Heron concluded.
