Coffee: The Main Driver of Exports
The coffee sector solidified its position as the flagship of Espírito Santo’s agribusiness exports, accounting for 60.1% of the total export value in 2024. The standout performer was Conilon coffee, with exports rising 78%, from 3.9 million bags in 2023 to over 7 million in 2024.
According to Enio Bergoli, Secretary of Agriculture, Supply, Aquaculture, and Fisheries:
“Conilon has established itself as the main product in our export portfolio. Favorable international prices and a strong dollar drove these results, while the high quality of Espírito Santo’s coffee ensured its acceptance in global markets. The coffee sector’s performance reinforces its position as the leading agricultural production chain in Espírito Santo.”
In addition to coffee, pulp (30.3%) and black pepper (4.5%) also stood out, collectively accounting for 95% of Espírito Santo’s agribusiness exports.
Market Diversification and National Leadership
In 2024, products from Espírito Santo reached 125 countries, with the United States as the top destination (22% of total export value). Espírito Santo also emerged as Brazil’s leading ginger, black pepper, and papaya exporter, with national shares of 62%, 58%, and 44%, respectively.
Additionally, the state surpassed São Paulo in the national coffee sector rankings, climbing to second place among Brazil’s top coffee and coffee-derivative exporters.
Historic Results and 2025 Outlook
The 2024 performance highlights the hard work of Espírito Santo’s producers and agribusinesses. Bergoli stated:
“The data demonstrates the resilience of Espírito Santo’s agribusiness in meeting global markets with quality and sustainable products. We are optimistic about 2025, expecting continued growth and further consolidation of our competitiveness in the international market.”
The record-breaking achievements in 2024 reaffirm Espírito Santo’s leadership in agribusiness and project a promising outlook for the coming years, driven by innovation, efficiency, and quality.
Note on Data Inconsistencies
The Secretariat of Agriculture, Supply, Aquaculture, and Fisheries (SEAG) identified discrepancies in export data for cane sugar (NCM 17011400) during February and March 2024, with values and volumes significantly above historical averages. After consulting industries and the Ministry of Development, suspected errors in invoice entries or atypical trading company operations were identified.
These data were excluded from the final analyses, and SEAG is working with relevant entities to resolve the inconsistencies.
