Porto Velho Port handled over two million tons of cargo in 2024

With an 18.08% growth in the volume of cargo handled in 2024, reaching 2,017,143.04 million tons, Porto de Porto Velho achieved a positive performance in the past year. This growth was mainly driven by the export of soybeans, consolidating itself as one of the leading products handled at the port terminal. Additionally, the import of fertilizers also showed growth, reflecting the high demand from the agribusiness sector.

This result was achieved despite the water crisis that began in 2023 and peaked in the past semester. The extreme drought caused by the El Niño phenomenon reduced the Madeira River’s level to a historic low of just 19 cm in the navigation channel, significantly impacting navigation and port logistics. Amidst the crisis, port operations were interrupted in September due to low river navigability and were only fully resumed in mid-December. However, advancing cargo transport during the high water period was crucial in minimizing the shutdown’s impacts and ensuring the continuity of operations.

Rondônia’s governor, Marcos Rocha, emphasized the promising data, highlighting the robust functioning of the port operations. “The results reinforce the port’s strategic importance for the logistics of the Northern region and its growing participation in foreign trade,” he pointed out.

Fernando Parente, CEO of the Society of Ports and Waterways of Rondônia (Soph), the company that manages Porto de Porto Velho, highlighted that “the strategy allowed for the maintenance of the logistical flow and ensured a positive return, demonstrating the effective planning of the sector in the face of climatic adversities.”

AGRICULTURAL GROWTH
Although the inability to navigate during the water crisis posed challenges, particularly reducing the movement of semitrailers, minerals, timber, and sugar, agricultural activity boosted the numbers in the first half of 2024. Soybean shipments increased by 23.72%, totaling 1,755,494.13 million tons, 336,616.42 thousand more than in 2023. On the import side, fertilizers saw a significant jump of 148.37%, with 66,096.24 thousand tons handled.
