The Port Authority of Santos has announced the construction of three new truck yards in the Baixada Santista region, with the possibility of a fourth. This measure is part of the Port of Santos expansion project, increasing its area from 7.8 million to 20.4 million square meters.
The yards within the Organized Port Area will be built in São Vicente, Guarujá, and Cubatão. In Cubatão, two yards will be constructed, one on Tatu Island. The port expansion aims to improve operational efficiency and integration with the surrounding cities. The new yards will offer services such as medical and psychological care and other services expected to generate income and boost local commerce.
However, the construction of the yard on Tatu Island in Cubatão has sparked controversy in the city. The Port Authority of Santos presents it as a solution to end truck traffic and parking in local neighborhoods. Additionally, it promises that the project will include social benefits, such as creating a park in part of the area.
The Port Authority of Santos highlights that 20,000 trucks circulate daily at the Port of Santos, representing 30% of Brazil’s foreign trade. The expansion is necessary to meet the national demand for adequate port infrastructure. The institution has committed to engaging with the community to avoid disruptions and, if they are unavoidable, compensate with infrastructure projects for the community.
