Espírito Santo Coffee in Europe: Exports Soar 150% to Reach 4.1 Million Bags

Espírito Santo exported 150% more coffee to the European Union in 2024, increasing from 1.6 million bags in 2023 to 4.1 million bags in 2024, according to a statement from the State Secretariat of Agriculture, Supply, Aquaculture, and Fisheries.
The figures include green coffee beans, soluble coffee, and roasted and ground coffee. “This was the highest volume ever exported to the European bloc in the historical series,” confirmed the secretariat. Meanwhile, revenue reached $852.6 million, a 227% increase compared to $260.1 million in 2023.
According to the secretariat, approximately 3.95 million bags contained green coffee beans, while 107,700 bags contained soluble coffee. In 2023, the European Union accounted for 26.2% of Espírito Santo’s total coffee exports, a share that jumped to 40.3% in 2024.
Espírito Santo’s Secretary of Agriculture, Enio Bergoli, attributed this performance to internal and external factors. “Internally, investments in technology and the expertise of producers have enhanced the quality of Espírito Santo’s coffee, especially Conilon,” he stated.
“Externally, the crop failure in Vietnam, international conflicts, and growing demand for sustainable coffee have driven this expansion,” he added.
Bergoli also pointed out that crop losses due to climatic issues in Conilon-producing countries like Vietnam and export delays have reduced European coffee stockpiles. Additionally, “concerns over the European Union’s new regulatory requirements led to an anticipation of purchases, consolidating Brazilian coffee as a strategic choice for importers.”
In the same statement, Fabrício Tristão, president of the Coffee Trade Center of Vitória (CCCV), noted that Brazilian robusta coffee has gained competitiveness. “We have expanded our supply of certified Espírito Santo coffees, and there was also a certain anticipation of purchases due to the expected implementation of the EU’s anti-deforestation law in December 2024, which ultimately did not occur.”
The introduction of the European regulation created uncertainty in the market, pushing importers to seek suppliers that complied with new environmental standards. As a result, Belgium, Germany, Italy, and Spain significantly increased their imports of Espírito Santo coffee in 2024, making them the primary destinations for the state’s coffee exports last year.
