The São Francisco do Sul Port administration met with George Santoro, Brazil’s Executive Secretary to the Minister of Transport, as well as local mayors and authorities from northern Santa Catarina, to discuss urgent solutions for BR-280, the only highway connecting the city to the national road network.
During the meeting on Friday (7), Port President Cleverton Vieira emphasized the port complex’s strategic importance to Brazil and urged authorities to prioritize improvements to the highway.
Santoro outlined infrastructure projects that already have approved execution plans and could begin in the coming months. These include the construction of a bypass around São Francisco do Sul and an overpass in front of the Federal Institute of Santa Catarina (IFSC) in Araquari.
However, for the rest of BR-280, a new bidding process will be required to contract the project, as the company originally set to handle the highway’s duplication has gone bankrupt.
“This is one of Brazil’s biggest logistical bottlenecks,” Santoro said, adding that he will present the severity of the situation to Transport Minister Renan Filho in an effort to accelerate the works.
