The Portuguese-flagged vessel Rubina has docked at Ilhéus Port carrying 16,000 tons of cocoa, making it one of the largest ships ever received in the city. Measuring 180 meters in length and 32 meters in width, its operation has mobilized dozens of workers and reinforced Ilhéus’ importance as a cocoa hub.
The Rubina’s operation is expected to last around 20 days, depending on weather conditions, and will involve more than 150 people, including direct and indirect labor, working in 24-hour shifts. The cargo transported by the ship is valued at approximately R$ 875 million, highlighting the economic significance of the operation.
The arrival of the Rubina boosts the local economy by generating jobs and stimulating various sectors. The port is solidifying its position as a strategic logistics hub, attracting new regional investments.
Importance for the Chocolate Industry
The cocoa cargo transported by the Rubina is essential for the region’s chocolate factories, which rely on a steady supply of raw materials to meet the growing market demand. This record-breaking volume underscores the need for expanding cocoa farming, ensuring a stronger and more sustainable supply for the local industry.
Modernization of Ilhéus Port
The port is undergoing a deepening dredging process, with an R$81 million investment from the Novo PAC program. This will allow it to accommodate larger vessels and reduce operational costs. According to port manager Gilberto Rodrigues, the project will enhance the terminal’s efficiency, making it more competitive.
The arrival of the Rubina marks a historic moment for Ilhéus. It reaffirms its relevance on the cocoa trade route and strengthens its economic and logistical development.
