Brazilian Agribusiness Law Congress to Address the Future of Integrated Supply Chains

Feb, 19, 2025 Posted by Gabriel Malheiros

Week 202508

The central theme of the opening panel at the 5th Brazilian Agribusiness Law Congress will be the importance and legal protections of integrated business networks in agribusiness supply chains. Organized by the Brazilian Institute of Agribusiness Law (IBDA), the event will focus on key legal and economic challenges facing the sector.

“This panel will explore updates to existing regulations, discussions on the application of legal principles and general clauses, and the economic function of contracts—an essential aspect for further improving the efficiency of agribusiness supply chains,” said Renato Buranello, IBDA’s president.

Buranello emphasized that these updates are also critical for shaping legal precedents and jurisprudence, ensuring that contractual relationships within global supply chains remain modern and legally sound.

Enhancing Contractual Efficiency in Agribusiness

The discussion will take a historical perspective on the sector’s legal framework, tracing its evolution since Brazil’s Land Statute of the 1960s. “Today, agribusiness operates within a far more complex organizational structure that spans pre-, intra-, and post-farm gate operations,” Buranello noted.

“All these integrated economic agents are connected through contracts—legal instruments with a social function that seek greater efficiency, improved outcomes, and risk mitigation within the industry.”

Panelist Thiago Castelliano, a Goiás State Court of Justice judge, highlighted the panel’s relevance in examining the past and future of contractual networks in agribusiness.

“Brazilian agribusiness faces complex challenges, from climate change and rising global food demand to the need for modernization and innovation,” Castelliano pointed out.

“In this context, contractual networks emerge as a key tool to drive sectoral development, foster integration among supply chain participants, and ensure legal and economic security in agribusiness operations.”
