Wilson Sons documented a significant improvement in operational efficiency at Tecon Santa Clara in 2024. The inland terminal, located in Triunfo’s Petrochemical Complex in Rio Grande do Sul, neared the end of the year with a 3% increase in container throughput compared to 2023. The export sector drove the expansion, followed by imports and cabotage.
In total, the terminal handled over 52,000 TEUs throughout the year. The main cargoes contributing to this increase were chemicals, resins, frozen poultry, and wood, which together accounted for 67% of total throughput at the terminal in 2024. The key origins were Triunfo, Gravataí, Taquari, and Garibaldi, while the primary export destinations were Belgium, China, Chile, India, and Peru.
Exports were led by resins, steel residues, and wood, representing 79% of total outbound cargo. Imports were driven by chemicals, resins, and paper, making up 73% of total inbound volumes. Cabotage was dominated by packaging, resins, and sheets, which together accounted for 94% of all domestic shipments.
Sustainability played a key role in 2024 operations, with the terminal achieving a 55% reduction in CO₂ equivalent emissions through inland waterway transport. A single vessel can transport the equivalent of hundreds of truckloads, cutting greenhouse gas emissions per tonne handled. Additionally, waterway transport eases road congestion and reduces infrastructure wear, generating environmental and logistical benefits.
“In 2024, export, import, and cabotage volumes reached significant levels, reinforcing Tecon Santa Clara’s essential role in containerized cargo throughput. With its strategic location, the terminal streamlines cargo flows for companies in Rio Grande do Sul, connecting them to Brazil and global markets. Furthermore, our operations remain focused on sustainability, prioritizing environmentally responsible practices,” said Paulo Bertinetti, CEO of Tecon Santa Clara.
Tecon Santa Clara specializes in multimodal transport for import, export, and cabotage shipments, operating two barges on four weekly routes between Triunfo and Rio Grande, moving Rio Grande do Sul’s cargo to international markets. Beyond creating new business opportunities for local industries, expanding inland navigation supports the development of more sustainable logistics solutions by reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
