
Rio de Janeiro’s PortosRio Hits Record Cargo Throughput of 76.2 Million Tonnes in 2024

PortosRio set a new record in 2024, handling 76.2 million tonnes—a 13.9% increase over 2023. According to data from the National Waterway Transport Agency’s (Antaq) Waterborne Statistical Report, this is the highest volume recorded since the historical series began in 2010 and marks the strongest post-pandemic growth period.
Itaguaí Port Highlights
Firmly established as Brazil’s second-largest public port in cargo throughput, the Port of Itaguaí moved 60.7 million tonnes in 2024, an 8.8% increase from the previous year.
Iron ore shipments reached 54.1 million tonnes, the highest level in the past decade, reflecting a 6.8% year-over-year increase.
Notably, the port handled 13.6% of Brazil’s seaborne iron ore exports, consolidating its role as the primary public port for this commodity.
Rio de Janeiro Port Highlights
The Port of Rio de Janeiro handled 15.5 million tonnes in 2024, posting a significant 39.7% increase compared to 2023.
Containerized cargo was the standout performer, totaling 11.8 million tonnes—an impressive 60.1% surge over the previous year.
Container throughput reached a record-breaking 1.2 million TEUs, a 70% jump from 2023.
