Porto do Açu and Sempen, a company specializing in renewable fuel production, signed a land reservation agreement this week for the port-industrial complex’s low-carbon hydrogen and derivatives hub in northern Rio de Janeiro state. The agreement paves the way for the construction of a green ammonia plant.

The new facility will have an annual production capacity of 1 million tonnes of green ammonia. The final investment decision (FID) is expected between 2027 and 2028, with the first green molecules set to be produced in 2030. This agreement further strengthens Porto do Açu’s role in Brazil’s energy transition, solidifying its position as a strategic hub in the low-carbon value chain.

“Porto do Açu is advancing the energy transition by developing an integrated platform for the low-carbon economy. Sempen’s arrival positions us as a leader in hydrogen and green ammonia production projects in Brazil,” said Mauro Andrade, Executive Director of Business Development at Prumo Logística.

Açu offers one of the best infrastructures in the country to support industrial decarbonization sustainably, featuring deep draft, available land with direct quay access, and a service cluster that brings together multiple port and maritime support providers.

“We are the first port in Brazil to obtain licensing for a 1-million-square-meter low-carbon hydrogen and derivatives hub, and we are currently licensing an additional 2 million square meters to expand operations. Sempen will be located in this new hub, and its partnership with us is another step toward establishing Açu as a hub for sustainable energy solutions, reinforcing our commitment to innovative projects that drive the global energy transition,” said Eugenio Figueiredo, CEO of Porto do Açu.

“The partnership with Porto do Açu marks a significant milestone in our journey to accelerate green ammonia and sustainable fuel production in Brazil. We are excited about the opportunity to contribute to the global energy transition and to be part of a strategic low-carbon hub that will support the sustainable development of the renewable energy and green hydrogen industries in the country,” said Juan Pablo Freijo, CEO of Sempen.

The port-industrial complex offers a well-developed ecosystem and competitive advantages, including deep draft, available land with direct quay access, and a robust service cluster comprising multiple port and maritime support providers, solidifying its position as a hub for sustainable energy solutions.
