The geopolitical uncertainty caused by U.S. President Donald Trump’s protectionist “America First” policy has added urgency to the economic cooperation pledged on Saturday by the foreign ministers of Japan, China, and South Korea.
Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, and South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Tae-yul met in the Japanese capital, marking the first meeting of its kind since 2023.
China sees an opportunity in Trump’s disruption of the international order, seeking to create a divide in the trilateral alliance between the United States, Japan, and South Korea.
