Port of Capuaba in Vila Velha Gains Greater Operational Capacity
May, 06, 2025 Posted by Denise VileraWeek 202520
The operational capacity of the Port of Capuaba has been expanded, and the port complex can now receive vessels of up to 83,000 tons—an increase from the previous limit of 70,000 tons. This expansion was made possible thanks to technical studies and a recently completed dredging project, which received an investment of R$ 30 million.
As a result of the upgrade, the port is expected to handle 70% more Panamax vessels, increasing from 504 to 861. This leap represents a significant step forward for Espírito Santo’s logistics infrastructure. In 2024, the port reached a major milestone: 8.4 million tons handled—commodities and manufactured products—marking a 15% growth, well above the national average of 1.2%. The outlook for 2025 is even more promising, with an expected throughput of 9 million tons.
The mayor of Vila Velha, Arnaldinho Borgo, stated that the port’s increased capacity will boost the city and state’s logistical competitiveness, ensuring greater efficiency, higher cargo allocation, and, consequently, lower cost per ton transported.
“The investments made by Vports in infrastructure and operational modernization will significantly enhance cargo handling capacity in the ports of Vila Velha while also offering a strategic alternative for long-haul routes and large-scale logistics operations,” emphasized the mayor.
According to Vila Velha’s Secretary of Economic Development, Everaldo Colodetti, the expansion marks a key milestone for the growth of the local and state logistics sector.
“The increase in operational capacity at our ports is a landmark achievement that strengthens Vila Velha’s role as a development driver in Espírito Santo. Beyond the numbers, we are talking about attracting new investments, boosting business competitiveness, and creating more jobs and income for our city and state,” said the secretary.
Rail Loop Project
Vports CEO Gustavo Serrão stated during an interview at the Intermodal South America trade show—held April 22 to 24 in São Paulo—that the company is making major strides toward modernizing and expanding Espírito Santo’s port infrastructure, ensuring greater efficiency and agility in operations.
“Since we took over the concession, we’ve secured R$ 580 million in investments for port modernization and improvements. One of the most significant projects is revitalizing the railway infrastructure within the Port of Vila Velha,” he said.
According to Serrão, this rail connection—linked to both the Vitória-Minas Railway (EFVM) and the Centro-Atlântica Railway (FCA)—opens up new logistics corridors between the Central-West region of Brazil, with a focus on Goiás, the Triângulo Mineiro region, and Espírito Santo.
“To streamline cargo transshipment and allow trains to enter and exit the yard without additional maneuvering, we are working to launch operations of the rail loop at the Port of Vila Velha by the end of 2025,” the CEO noted.
