For the third consecutive year, TCP — the Paranaguá Container Terminal company — has been awarded the I-REC (International Renewable Energy Certificate), confirming that 100% of its electricity consumption is sourced from renewable energy.

The most recent certificate, covering 2024, certifies the offset of 112,518 MWh, all generated by hydroelectric plants. “Electricity consumption at the terminal increased by 40% from 2023 to 2024 — a rise we anticipated due to recent infrastructure investments and equipment electrification. Since 2022, we’ve committed to sourcing all our electricity from renewable sources, as we believe the port logistics sector plays a crucial role in the transition to a greener economy. At TCP, we take that responsibility seriously and continue to set increasingly ambitious goals,” said Kayo Zaiats, TCP’s Environmental Manager.

One of the main drivers of increased electricity demand was the expansion of the terminal’s reefer (refrigerated container) storage area. With a 45% increase in plug points — from 3,624 to 5,268 — TCP now boasts the largest reefer yard in South America and leads the Brazilian market in the handling of meat and frozen goods, with a 40.1% market share in the segment in the first two months of 2025.

Switching from diesel-powered equipment to electric generators also had a major impact. At the rail yard serving the terminal, three RTG cranes were electrified. Weighing over 150 tons and taller than an eight-story building, these machines collectively eliminated carbon emissions equivalent to those produced by 369 cars in a year.

Employee transportation is now supported by a fully electric D9W 20.410 bus from Chinese manufacturer BYD on the terminal’s 480,000-square-meter operations yard. Silent and with a 250 km range per charge, the bus features regenerative braking technology that helps recharge the battery every time it brakes. By the end of 2025, a second electric bus is expected to join the terminal’s fleet.
