On Monday (5), in Paranaguá, the Federal Police rescued three undocumented African migrants aboard a Bahamian-flagged vessel. The ship’s crew, which had departed from the Port of Freetown, the capital of Sierra Leone, on April 17, discovered the migrants hiding onboard.
The three men from Sierra Leone said they were fleeing precarious living conditions and ethnic conflicts between local tribes. All expressed interest in seeking asylum in Brazil.
After questioning the migrants, the ship’s insurance company assumed responsibility for their care. The migrants were then taken to a hotel, where they awaited the next steps in the legal process.
