Svitzer, a global leader in towage and port support services, is celebrating a decade of operations in Brazil. Since launching in 2015, Svitzer Brazil has solidified its presence in the country’s main ports, building a track record of investments, sustainable growth, and a strong commitment to operational excellence. Over this period, the company has invested more than BRL 650 million in the Brazilian market, generating over 200 direct jobs and many more indirectly through commercial partnerships with local suppliers and shipyards.
Continuing its expansion in the country, the company now operates in 9 of Brazil’s main ports, seeks to expand its service coverage, and remains open to new opportunities. In recent months, six new tugboats—built entirely in Brazil—have been added to the fleet, reinforcing Svitzer’s service capacity and reaffirming its belief in Brazil’s logistics potential. In line with its principle of fostering partnerships with domestic companies, Svitzer has also commissioned three new vessels currently under construction at the Rio Maguari Shipyard in Belém (Pará), as part of a strategy focused on anticipating demand and promoting technological innovation.
“We have a clear strategy for the Brazilian market. We are committed to delivering safe, reliable, and high-quality services while supporting the development of the country’s logistics sector,” says Daniel Cohen, Managing Director of Svitzer Brazil.
Commitment to Sustainability
Svitzer is also making steady progress toward its environmental goals. Globally, the company is committed to reducing its fleet’s CO₂ emission intensity by 50% by 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality by 2040.
Among the highlighted initiatives is a pilot project developed in partnership with VIBRA, which tests the use of marine diesel with up to 20% biodiesel. Tests conducted in March of this year have paved the way for the potential permanent adoption of the technology, possibly increasing the biodiesel blend to 30%.
“We are focused on developing tangible solutions for clients committed to decarbonizing their supply chains. Our goal is to build a more sustainable future through innovation and strategic partnerships,” Cohen emphasizes.
Electrification Projects in Brazilian Ports
Reinforcing its pioneering role in the industry, in 2025, Svitzer also supported port electrification projects at the terminals of Rio Grande (RS) and Salvador (BA), in addition to ongoing initiatives in Santos (SP) and Suape (PE).
These projects use Onshore Power Supply (OPS) systems, which allow docked tugboats to operate using clean shore-side electricity instead of diesel generators. This contributes to an estimated 15% reduction in CO₂ emissions.
“With OPS systems, we are driving efficiencies for our customers and the environment, aligning our operations with global demands for low-carbon logistics,” Cohen concludes.
