Wheat Mill at the Port of Ilhéus to Be Reactivated After 17 Years

The Federal Port Authority in Bahia (Codeba) will reactivate the Wheat Mill at the Port of Ilhéus after 17 years of inactivity. The company’s bidding process for the Onerous Grant of Use of the industrial unit for wheat processing was concluded last week with the signing of a contract with Jav Indústria de Alimentos, owner of the Maratá Group.
The planned investment for implementing and operating the wheat milling unit—including the acquisition of equipment, construction of new storage silos, and restoration of the physical asset for the full operation of the mill, with a capacity of up to 120,000 tons per year—is R$130 million.
The total area granted to the group is 16,719 square meters, with a 35-year usage contract.
Reactivation
To reopen the former deactivated wheat mill, which had an idle processing capacity of over 100,000 tons per year, the Business and Market Relations Directorate of the Port Authority of Bahia conducted a two-year effort to prospect companies across the country that operate in the wheat processing sector and might be interested in using the area and existing physical infrastructure.
“In addition to reviving an important economic activity for the Ilhéus region and the entire state of Bahia, the reactivation of the mill will allow for increased port throughput, the creation of direct and indirect jobs in the region, increased municipal revenue, and the attraction of other segments of the wheat production chain, which could establish operations around the Ilhéus Port Complex,” explained director José Demétrius Moura.
According to him, this development will economically strengthen southern Bahia and reduce costs for attracting and establishing new food manufacturing plants beyond the revenue from wheat imports for processing at the port’s mill.
Antonio Gobbo, CEO of the Port Authority of Bahia, emphasized that reactivating the wheat mill is a long-standing demand from the local population and a major market opportunity, especially since Brazil does not produce all the wheat required for domestic consumption.
“We had an asset of this importance idle for nearly 20 years, and Codeba’s efforts now allow this industrial activity to be revived in Ilhéus, utilizing the existing infrastructure under our ownership,” Gobbo stated.
Earlier this year, Codeba carried out maintenance dredging at the port to maintain a depth of ten meters and ensure accessibility for vessels operating at the Organized Port of Ilhéus.
The next step in starting Maratá Group’s wheat processing operations is for CODEBA to issue the Authorization Letter, allowing the group to assume control of Areas 3 and 4 of the Ilhéus Port Complex.
