The versatility of plastic—a lightweight, durable, insulating material that can be molded into various forms—along with its longevity and low cost, makes it an essential input for many industries: packaging, automotive parts, electronic components, construction materials, clothing, and toys. It is also indispensable in the medical sector for packaging and devices, and in the production of furniture and household items.
In 2024, imports in this segment totaled USD 11 billion, averaging USD 9.32 million per month. According to the study, the Brazilian states with the highest import volumes in the past three months were São Paulo (30.1%) and Santa Catarina (29.6%). The top countries supplying plastic to Brazil were the United States and China, accounting for 46.9% of total imports and over USD 1.3 billion.
