Brazil Authorizes Temporary Storage of Chicken Meat for Export

The Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture has preventively authorized the temporary storage of chicken meat shipments that have already been inspected and cleared for export, following a request from the Brazilian Association of Animal Proteins (ABPA).
The measure aims to provide greater logistical flexibility in response to restrictions imposed by several countries after a confirmed case of avian influenza was reported at a commercial poultry farm in Montenegro, Rio Grande do Sul, last Friday. ABPA confirmed the authorization to Broadcast Agro.
According to the association, the products will be stored in refrigerated containers with active cooling systems outside the traditional storage infrastructure but still under strict sanitary control.
A similar measure was implemented during the 2018 truck drivers’ strike, which caused major disruptions to the transportation and distribution of agricultural products.
So far, Brazil’s chicken meat exports have been suspended to 21 destinations, including China, the European Union, Mexico, South Korea, South Africa, Russia, Canada, Argentina, and others.
This list includes both countries that imposed restrictions and those to which Brazil has voluntarily suspended export certification by the sanitary protocols established with each trading partner.
In addition, some markets, including the United Kingdom, Bahrain, Cuba, and Ukraine, have imposed regional restrictions targeting poultry shipments specifically from Rio Grande do Sul.
Japan, for example, suspended imports specifically from the municipality of Montenegro, the location of the confirmed outbreak. Saudi Arabia also suspended shipments from the same area following a bilateral agreement.
Other countries—such as Singapore, Vietnam, and India—have adopted a regionalized approach, restricting shipments within a 10-kilometer radius of the outbreak based on previously established agreements with Brazil.
