Strike by Tax Auditors Halts Imports in Brazil
May, 27, 2025 Posted by Denise VileraWeek 202522
The strike by tax auditors of the Federal Revenue Service has now lasted six months, affecting the delivery of over one million international parcels, particularly clothing and electronics purchased from foreign websites. Approximately 4,000 civil servants are participating in the nationwide strike, resulting in significant delays in the clearance of goods.
The tax auditors are demanding salary adjustments, claiming that inflationary losses have not been compensated since the last adjustment in 2016. In addition to imports, the strike is also negatively impacting Brazilian exports.
At locations such as São Paulo International Airport in Guarulhos, there is a critical volume of improperly stored goods due to lack of space. However, essential items such as live animals, food, and medicine continue to be released swiftly.
The Federal Revenue Service has not yet stated the situation. Since the strike began, it is estimated that Brazil has lost more than R$7 billion in tax revenue due to delays in customs clearance.
