Government to Make Itajaí Port Independent from Santos Port, Says Minister

The Minister of Ports and Airports, Silvio Costa Filho, announced this Thursday (May 29) that the federal government will make the Port of Itajaí, in Santa Catarina, independent from the Port of Santos (SP). The plan is to create a federal company to manage the Itajaí terminal through a provisional measure. Since January of this year, the port has been under federal administration, but due to the absence of a dedicated entity, it has been managed by the Santos Port Authority.

“We will be submitting a provisional measure that will turn the Port of Itajaí into an independent dock and a federal port,” said Costa Filho during an event at the Port of Itajaí.

Alongside President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, the minister took part in the ceremony marking the resumption of operations at the terminal, which had been inactive for over a year, from 2022 to early 2023.

In addition to celebrating the port’s reopening, the event also highlighted new investments in the facility. Since January, the Port of Itajaí has been managed by the federal government through the Santos Port Authority, which is part of the Ministry of Ports and Airports.

João Paulo Tavares, the current port superintendent, was appointed by President Lula and took office in March. Décio Lima, the president of Sebrae and a former federal congressman from Santa Catarina, also supported his appointment.

The announced investments include upgrades to boost cargo throughput, focusing on modernizing facilities, improving safety and logistical efficiency, and expanding the port’s capacity.
