Following Dredging Operations, the Port of Vitória Now Able to Receive Larger Vessels

Vports, the concessionaire responsible for managing the Ports of Vitória and Barra do Riacho, has announced the completion of dredging operations at both terminals—enabling the arrival of larger vessels used in international trade.
According to the company, the number of “Panamax” vessels—a class of ships designed to transit the Panama Canal, connecting the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans—is expected to increase by 70% following the conclusion of the works.
Previously, the maximum deadweight tonnage (DWT)—which defines the ship’s maximum cargo capacity—was limited to 70,000 tons. That threshold has now been raised to 83,000 tons, expanding the range of vessels able to dock and boosting cargo throughput potential.
The two ports received a total investment of R$30 million (approximately US$5.6 million) for the dredging, a process that involves the removal of sediments from the seabed to increase water depth and allow access for larger and heavier ships.
Both terminals, which serve cabotage and international trade routes, are ramping up investment in response to broader efforts to enhance the state’s logistics infrastructure—particularly in anticipation of Brazil’s upcoming tax reform.
This agenda has been consistently supported by state government officials, who see it as critical for attracting new investments.
“In Vitória, this work ensures the port continues operating without any restrictions, maintaining quality and efficiency standards. At Barra do Riacho, this is the first-ever dredging campaign—a key step in attracting strategic partners to help develop the area,” said Gustavo Serrão, CEO of Vports.
The ongoing expansion and construction of additional port terminals are also driving competition across the sector.
