Brazilian Cotton Exports Decline in May

Brazil’s exports of cotton lint totaled 192.20 thousand tonnes in May 2025, representing a 19.63% decrease from the volume shipped in April. Despite this monthly decline, the volume still represents the second highest on record for May, according to the weekly analysis released by the Mato Grosso Institute of Agricultural Economics (Imea) on Monday (June 9).

Imea notes that “it is seasonally common for the pace of shipments to slow down as the end of the commercial cycle approaches.” The state of Mato Grosso accounted for 67.55% of Brazil’s total exports in May, sending 129.84 thousand tonnes of cotton abroad.

In the accumulated total for the current export cycle (August 2024 to May 2025), Mato Grosso has already exported 1.65 million tonnes, the highest volume ever recorded for this period. Imea concludes that despite the May slowdown, “shipments remain at historically high levels, supporting expectations for a new export record this season.”
