The superintendent of the Port of Itajaí, João Paulo Tavares Bastos, was in Brasília on Wednesday (June 11) for a meeting at the Palácio do Planalto with Gleisi Hoffmann, Minister of Institutional Relations, to discuss the creation of Companhia Docas de Itajaí. This federal company will manage the port. Minister Hoffmann had previously attended the ceremony announcing the company’s creation at the Port of Itajaí alongside President Lula last month.

According to João Paulo Tavares Bastos, Minister Gleisi is actively working with the National Congress to fast-track the approval of the Provisional Measure that will establish the new port authority company. Currently, the Port of Itajaí is managed by the federal government through the Port Authority of Santos.

“Minister Gleisi is familiar with the Port of Itajaí’s history and is committed to securing approval of the Provisional Measure that will create the Companhia Docas de Itajaí. Her support is essential to ensure the measure is approved this year,” said Bastos.

Below is a historical overview of container throughput at the Port of Itajaí starting from September 2024, when the port resumed handling regular container shipping services. The chart was created using data from DataLiner:

He also announced that, in the coming days, the Ministry of Ports and Airports will form a working group to finalize the text of the Provisional Measure. Once completed, the draft will be submitted by the federal government for a vote in Congress later this year.

“The port will also benefit from an investment plan totaling R$ 844 million, aimed at modernization, improvements in safety, logistics efficiency, and the expansion of port capacity,” Bastos emphasized.
