The latest edition of Panorama Transportes by Infra S.A. shows that, as of May 2025, the Federal Government has already invested R$51.4 million in railway projects in Brazil—a 15% increase compared to the same period last year. The data was released last Thursday.
According to the federal public company, the funds were primarily allocated to work on the West-East Integration Railway (Fiol) in Bahia, resuming sections that had been stalled for over a decade. Progress was made possible by a legal agreement between Infra S.A. and quilombola communities in the Bom Jesus da Lapa region of Bahia.
In terms of cargo transportation, the highlight was the road transport of fuels and derivatives. From January to May, volume rose 7.3% year-over-year, totaling 35.7 million cubic meters (m³). Grain transportation, including soybeans and corn, also increased, reaching 40.2 million tonnes—a 3.8% rise compared to the same period in 2024.
Air freight posted a 1.5% uptick, totaling 8.1 million kilograms from January to May, with 118.6 million kilograms recorded in May alone. Waterway transport focused on foreign trade grew 0.3%, with 394.6 million tonnes moved during the same period.
Employment
The labor market in the transport sector showed a positive balance in May 2025, with the creation of 4,472 formal jobs. Road freight transport was the main driver, accounting for 2,676 new jobs, reflecting increased goods movement.
