Brazil chicken prices rise in August as exports rebound

Chicken meat prices in Brazil have risen in early August, driven by stronger demand, according to data from the Center for Advanced Studies in Applied Economics (Cepea). In addition to the seasonal boost in purchasing power from wage payments, the end of school holidays and Father’s Day have lifted consumption and, in turn, poultry prices.

As of Thursday (Aug. 7), wholesale prices in Greater São Paulo reached R$7.32 per kilo for frozen chicken, up 1.39% so far this month. Chilled chicken averaged R$7.43/kg, representing a 2.91% increase since the start of August.

On the export front, Brazilian chicken shipments rebounded in July after two straight months of decline. Foreign trade data (Secex) show that 399,600 tonnes of chicken meat — including fresh and processed products — were exported last month, up 16.3% from June but down 13.8% year-on-year.

Cepea researchers noted it was the strongest monthly result since an outbreak of avian influenza was confirmed in a commercial farm in Montenegro, Rio Grande do Sul, in May.
