The governments of Brazil and South Africa have concluded a phytosanitary agreement, allowing Brazil to export sesame seeds to that country.

This market opening represents progress for Brazil’s agricultural sector. With more than 63 million inhabitants, South Africa has the most diversified and industrialized economy on the continent of Africa. In 2024, the country imported approximately USD 635 million in agricultural products from Brazil, with highlights including meats, refined sugar, green coffee, and forestry products.

Brazilian sesame exports totaled approximately USD 348 million in 2024, representing a value increase of over 58% compared to 2023, driven by strong international demand.

With this announcement, Brazil’s agribusiness sector has reached 398 new trade opportunities since the beginning of 2023.

These results are the outcome of joint efforts between the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAPA) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA).
