The Port of Itajaí recorded a sharp 1,494.58% increase in cargo throughput in the first half of 2025. Between January and June, 1.7 million tonnes were handled, compared to just 104,000 tonnes in the same period last year. More than just numbers, the result reflects economic recovery, job creation, and new investments for the entire region.
Below is a historical overview of cargo handling at the Port of Itajaí from January 2022 to June 2025. The chart was prepared using data from DataLiner:

“The 1,494% growth in 2025 is not just a number, but proof that the Port of Itajaí has regained its strength and once again serves as a driver of economic development for our region. Each tonne handled means more jobs, more revenue for the city, and the consolidation of new investments. We are experiencing a historic phase of reconstruction and modernization, and Itajaí is reclaiming its role as a key player in national logistics,” said João Paulo Tavares Bastos, superintendent of the Port of Itajaí.
Nationwide, Brazilian ports handled a total of 653.7 million tonnes during the period, representing a 1% increase over 2024. The standout, however, was Itajaí, which returned to prominence after being nearly inactive in 2022.
According to the Minister of Ports and Airports, Sílvio Costa Filho, the growth reflects the Federal Government’s investment policy and the reactivation of operations at the port complex.
The modernization plan entails R$844 million in investments through 2030, including the dredging of the Itajaí-Açu River, the restructuring of the Navegantes breakwater, and the construction of a cruise ship pier, among other infrastructure projects.
The next step will be the creation of the Port Authority of Itajaí, which will grant the complex full administrative autonomy. To this end, the Ministry of Ports and Airports (MPor) has established a Technical Working Group (GTT) tasked with developing the framework for the future federal public company that will replace the transitional management currently handled by the Port Authority of Santos.
