The Electronic Phytosanitary Certificate (e-Phyto), implemented by Brazil’s Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (Mapa), surpassed the milestone of 20,000 issuances on Monday, August 18.

The tool was launched in May 2024 by Minister Carlos Fávaro, with the first certificate issued on January 16 of this year, following the implementation of Ordinance No. 749/2024, which made certification mandatory for the export of plant-based products.

Minister Carlos Fávaro emphasized that the certificate serves as a “passport” for goods, ensuring the health of products in international trade. According to him, the process is being modernized to improve efficiency by eliminating the need for physical documents and stamps. “I want to leave behind a modern ministry that makes life easier for the public and opens up new opportunities,” he said.

The e-Phyto, short for “electronic phytosanitary certificate,” was developed by Mapa in partnership with the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC). It aims to replace paper certificates with secure, standardized digital versions, streamlining international trade by reducing bureaucracy and improving processing speed.

To date, 447 companies have utilized the system to export plant-based products, with certificates issued at 61 locations across Brazil’s ports and airports. The documents have been sent to 52 countries and have covered 56 different plant products, including fruits, grains, seeds, and more.

The e-Phyto has proven to be an important facilitator for Brazilian exports of plant products, offering greater efficiency, security, and traceability in the certification process.

With continued digitalization, the number of certificates issued is expected to keep growing in the coming months, further expanding market access for Brazilian agricultural products under a more effective and globally recognized certification model.
