Windstorm over 110 km/h forces closure of Brazil’s Port of Santos

A windstorm exceeding 110 km/h hit the coast of São Paulo between Saturday night (23) and the early hours of Sunday (24). The city of Santos was one of the hardest hit, and the Port of Santos had to be closed.

According to the Santos Civil Defense, wind speeds peaked at 121.12 km/h at 11:54 p.m. on Saturday (23), as recorded by the Pilotage Authority’s sensor. The wind velocity was significantly higher than the expected 80 km/h.

The Port of Santos was closed due to the storm. Operations were halted around 11:50 p.m. on Saturday (23), and the port only reopened in the early hours of Sunday at around 3:20 a.m.

The high winds caused seven trees to fall in the city of Santos, leading to road blockages. The city government and Civil Defense worked with other agencies to trim and remove the trees.

In the northern coastal area, Ilhabela recorded fallen trees, downed power lines, and roof damage to homes. Ferry operations between the island and the mainland were suspended. Power outages were also reported.

In São Sebastião, two incidents of fallen trees were recorded, including one on a public road. The municipalities of São Vicente, Bertioga, and Cubatão were also affected, with reports of fallen trees. In Guarujá, five trees fell on public roads.
