Brazil Seeks Approval for 14 More Beef Plants to Export to Mexico

Representatives of the Brazilian government are on a mission in Mexico to negotiate, among other issues, the approval of 14 additional beef plants, according to the Brazilian Beef Exporters Association (Abiec). “Fourteen new plants should be approved, bringing the total to 49,” said Abiec president Roberto Perosa, who is part of the delegation.
Companies that could be authorized include units of Minerva, JBS, Marfrig, and BRF. There are also plants from Frisa, Distriboi, Agra, Prima Foods, Meat Snack, Better Beef, and Iguatemi.
Mexican authorities have proposed an opening remote meeting, followed by an on-site audit at all 49 plants—including those already approved—between September 15 and 26, according to the report.
Perosa added that one of Abiec’s priorities in Mexico is advancing negotiations for a free trade agreement that would provide greater predictability and competitiveness for Brazilian exports.
The association is also seeking a two-year renewal of the Pacic, the Mexican government’s anti-inflation package, considered “fundamental to maintaining tariff exemptions on essential food basket inputs and supporting local purchasing power.”
Strategic partnership
The initiative aims to increase the number of Brazilian slaughterhouses authorized to export, diversify suppliers, strengthen Mexico’s food security, and consolidate Brazil as a strategic partner.

Preliminary trade data indicate that from August 1 to 25, Mexico imported 10,200 tonnes of Brazilian beef, making it the second-largest buyer after China.
Until last month, the United States held the second position, but it lost ground following the imposition of additional 50% tariffs on Brazilian products, effective August 6.
