The National Waterway Transport Agency (Antaq) has unanimously approved authorization for Super Terminais to operate a floating pier in Itacoatiara (AM), a municipality located 175 kilometers from Manaus. The project aims to handle the transshipment of solid bulk cargo, primarily soybeans and corn, thereby strengthening logistics in the Amazon region and expanding Brazil’s cargo export alternatives.

The process was reported by Wilson Pereira de Lima Filho, who concluded that the proposed terminal is legally adequate, technically feasible, complies with environmental regulations, and does not present competitive or operational conflicts. His vote was supported by the other directors of the regulatory agency: Caio César Farias Leôncio, Alber Furtado de Vasconcelos Neto, and Flavia Morais Lopes Takafashi.

The new unit was classified as a TUP (Private Use Terminal), as the structure will be used for maritime cargo flow, with plans to serve Panamax-type bulk carriers. These large vessels already operate in the region and will have the floating port in Itacoatiara as a support point for grain handling.

The floating pier will be similar to the model used on an emergency basis for containers during the 2024 drought. The difference lies in its size and purpose: measuring 240 meters in length, 18 meters in width, and spanning a total area of 4,320 square meters, the structure will be equipped with three cranes, each with a capacity of up to 2,100 tonnes per hour. The pier will be fixed to the bed of the Amazon River, precisely where the temporary port operated during the navigation disruptions last year.

Porto Verde is expected to begin operations in January 2026. Activities will be exclusively dedicated to the transshipment of solid bulk between bulk carriers and barges, with no need for cargo storage.

Investment

The total planned investment is R$150 million. With the construction and operation of the new pier, the project is expected to create 130 direct jobs and 250 indirect jobs in Itacoatiara and nearby municipalities. In addition to job creation, the operation should help boost the local economy and position the city as a strategic logistics hub within the Northern Arc.

According to Super Terminais director Marcello Di Gregorio, the initiative reinforces the company’s focus on efficiency and expanding export routes. “Our goal is to bring to Itacoatiara the level of operational efficiency that is already a trademark of Super Terminais, while generating jobs, stimulating the municipality’s economy, and driving grain exports through the Northern Arc, revolutionizing traditional operations.”

The city already hosts major port operations, and with the opening of Porto Verde, it will expand its capacity to meet growing demand for soybean and corn exports. Access to the Atlantic Ocean via the Amazon River enhances the integration of Brazilian agricultural production with international markets, especially in Europe and Asia.
