Grupo Maratá announced an investment of R$129 million to reactivate the Wheat Mill at the Port of Ilhéus, in Bahia. The new industrial facility will have an installed capacity to process 144,000 tonnes of wheat per year, with operations expected to begin in July 2026. The project will focus on wheat milling and the production of derivatives, and is estimated to generate 80 direct jobs and another 100 indirect ones.
The announcement was made by the group’s general director, Frank Vieira, during a meeting with the state secretary for Economic Development (SDE), Ângelo Almeida, on Tuesday (9).
According to Vieira, in addition to the agro-industrial sector, the mill will also supply animal feed factories, taking advantage of by-products generated in the milling process. He stressed that Bahia is currently the largest consumer market for wheat in the Northeast.
“All of the mill’s output will be dedicated to meeting Bahia’s consumption, which is very high. There is a deficit in the state, and that was the main reason for our decision to set up here. In addition, wheat produces a by-product used in animal feed, and we saw southern Bahia as a strategic location to meet that demand. That’s why we chose Ilhéus,” he explained.
The executive also revealed that a study is underway for a second phase of expansion, leveraging Bahia’s strategic location to supply other regions of the country as well.
SDE secretary Ângelo Almeida highlighted: “This is yet another investment attracted to the state’s interior that will generate jobs and income for the people of Bahia. Grupo Maratá is one of the largest Brazilian food companies, with a strong national presence, and will be a key player in the agro-industrial food chain. The mill strengthens value-added production and reinforces the wheat supply chain. Its location next to the Port of Malhado will also bring logistical advantages.”
