Brazilian exports of products hit by the tariff surcharges imposed by the United States fell 22% in August compared with the same month in 2024.

Sales of items not subject to the additional U.S. tariffs also declined, but by a smaller margin of 7%.
The findings are from the Brazil–United States Trade Monitor, a bulletin prepared by the American Chamber of Commerce for Brazil (Amcham).
According to the organization, last month’s data show that the surcharges imposed by Washington caused a sharp drop in Brazilian exports and have also contributed to a slowdown in imports.
The analysis is based on figures from Brazil’s Ministry of Development, Industry, Trade, and Services, which had already reported that Brazilian exports to the U.S. contracted 18.5% in August versus the same month of 2024.
As for untaxed products, Amcham noted that the 7% drop was driven “mainly by market factors, such as weaker U.S. demand for oil and derivatives.”
The United States is Brazil’s second-largest trading partner, behind only China.
In the first eight months of 2025, bilateral trade reached US$56 billion. Brazil’s exports accounted for US$26 billion, up 1.6% compared with January–August 2024.
But the August result alone marked the steepest monthly decline of 2025, “indicating that the tariff hike influenced business decisions,” Amcham said.
The tariff package imposed by the Donald Trump administration—up to 50% on a large share of Brazilian exports to the U.S.—has been in effect since August 6. About 700 products were exempt, including orange juice and pulp, fuels, minerals, and pulp.
