Japan overtakes United States as top buyer of Brazilian eggs

Brazilian egg exports fell in August 2025. The second consecutive monthly decline comes as shipments of fresh eggs to the United States dropped following tariffs imposed by the U.S. government.
According to an analysis by the Center for Advanced Studies on Applied Economics (Cepea) at the University of São Paulo (USP) in Piracicaba (SP), based on Foreign Trade Secretariat (Secex) data and released last Friday (Sept. 12), Japan has overtaken the U.S. as the main buyer of Brazilian eggs.
In August this year, the U.S. purchased 2,130 tonnes of fresh and processed eggs from Brazil’s agribusiness sector, a volume 60% lower than in July. However, the figure is still 72% higher than in August 2024, Cepea researchers noted.
“Japan became the main destination for Brazilian eggs last month, acquiring 578 tonnes, 29% more than in July. Even with the recent declines over the last two months, year-to-date performance remains positive,” Cepea observed.
Decline in July shipments
The downturn in Brazilian egg exports began in July, after steady growth in the first half of 2025. That month marked a 20% drop in foreign sales.
Researchers attribute the decline to a 31% fall in shipments to the United States.
“According to Secex data compiled and analyzed by Cepea, Brazil shipped 5,260 tonnes of fresh and processed eggs in July, 20% less than in June,” Cepea reported.
Although export volumes fell between June and July, they were still 305% higher than in July 2024. For Cepea, despite the decline, Brazil continues to consolidate itself as a key global supplier of eggs.
Between January and August, Brazil exported about 32,300 tonnes of fresh and processed eggs — a 192.2% increase compared with the same period in 2024. The total already surpasses by 75% all exports recorded in the previous year, according to Secex figures analyzed by Cepea.
August price gains in the domestic market
In the domestic market, egg prices began to rise in August in most regions monitored by Cepea. “This movement was driven by the end of the school holidays, which supported demand recovery, and by the beginning of the month, when consumers usually have more cash and protein consumption tends to increase,” Cepea noted.
Price decline in June
According to a Cepea bulletin released at the end of the first half of 2025, egg prices had reached their lowest daily levels of the year in Brazil’s main producing regions in June.
Restrictions on Brazilian poultry imports following avian influenza outbreaks in Europe also extended to eggs, while China, Europe, and Argentina suspended purchases of Brazilian chicken after the first domestic case of the disease was confirmed at a commercial farm.
Although Brazil has since regained avian flu-free status, Cepea researchers emphasized that imports of poultry products, including eggs, have not yet fully resumed.
The downward trend had already started in April 2025, when egg prices hit their lowest of the year after previously rising 40%. In May, the price decline further reduced liquidity across all markets tracked by Cepea, with monthly averages falling to their lowest levels since January 2025.
“This devaluation was linked to weaker demand and higher supply in some regions, not to the case of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) confirmed at a commercial farm in Montenegro (RS),” Cepea stressed in its bulletin.
