A bulk carrier loaded with fertilizers ran aground while maneuvering to enter the Port of Santos, on the coast of São Paulo. Images captured on Monday (15) show the Chinese-flagged vessel Shandong Xin Ze stranded at sea.

According to the Brazilian Navy, the vessel reportedly lost propulsion while entering the port’s access channel on Sunday (14). The Santos Port Authority (APS) said the ship had been scheduled to dock to unload fertilizers at a terminal.

APS added that navigation at the quay was temporarily suspended between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. on Sunday, until the vessel was anchored with tug assistance outside the channel. Both the port authority and the Navy confirmed that the incident has not affected ship traffic or overall port operations.

Monitoring
The Navy noted that the São Paulo Port Captaincy (CPSP) has been overseeing the situation from the outset, coordinating salvage actions with the vessel’s agent and owner. Two tugs remain on standby nearby to prevent the ship from drifting into shallower waters.

An Administrative Inquiry into Navigation Accidents and Incidents (IAFN) has been opened to investigate the causes of the grounding.
