Minister Silvio Costa Filho announced this Friday (19) a package of strategic investments in the Port of Recife. He signed a commitment agreement for dredging works to adapt the port and launched the tender for the lease of the Recife Passenger Terminal (TMP Recife), in a ceremony attended by Pernambuco’s governor, Raquel Lyra, and the president of the Port of Recife, Tito Lívio de Morais.
The dredging project, with an estimated value of R$100 million, will increase the depth of the internal and external channels, ensuring a draft of up to 12 meters, which will allow the docking of larger vessels.
For the president of the Port of Recife, Tito Lívio de Morais, the project is a turning point. “The dredging represents a milestone for the Port of Recife. With the increased draft, we will have more safety and efficiency, expanding the capacity to receive larger ships and strengthening our competitiveness. This investment consolidates the port as a strategic asset for Pernambuco and for Brazil,” he said.
Minister’s remarks during the event
During the ceremony, Minister Silvio Costa Filho highlighted the positive momentum in the Brazilian port sector, which in 2024 recorded the highest cargo throughput in history, exceeding 1.3 billion tonnes. He noted that in just the first half of this year, volumes grew by more than 4% compared with the same period last year. “These numbers show the strength of the sector for Brazil’s development. The dredging of the Port of Recife and the leasing of the Passenger Terminal are investments that reduce logistics costs, attract new cargoes, and strengthen tourism. Our commitment is to transform the port into a hub for cargo and cruises in the Northeast, generating jobs, income, and opportunities for the people of Pernambuco,” the minister said.
Governor Raquel Lyra also stressed the importance of the partnership with the federal government in making the projects possible. For her, the investments establish Pernambuco as a national leader. “This R$100 million investment in dredging the Port of Recife is a concrete demonstration of the federal government’s commitment to our state. Improving port infrastructure and strengthening the Passenger Terminal means more tourism, more jobs, and more development. With partnerships and dialogue, we will transform people’s lives and guarantee a better future for Pernambuco,” she stated.
With the completion of dredging and the lease of TMP Recife, the Port of Recife reinforces its strategic role both in cargo handling and cruise reception, positioning itself as one of the main gateways for tourism and trade in the Northeast.
