Chinese crew member killed at Port of Santos after crane cable snaps

A 35-year-old Chinese crew member died on Monday night (29) at the Port of Santos after a cable snapped during maintenance on a shipboard crane. The rupture caused the cable to strike the victim at around 10:45 p.m., according to the Santos Port Authority (APS). As reported by A Tribuna, the cable hit the victim’s face.

According to APS, the crew member was aboard the vessel Forever SW, which was docked on the Right Bank of the Port of Santos to unload bulk salt. A stevedore who witnessed the incident told the newspaper that, while the Chinese national was being assisted, “the other gang (work team) continued operations.”

Moments later, the grab (equipment used to move bulk cargo on vessels via a crane or derrick) fell, though it did not hit anyone. According to the dockworker, there was heavy vehicle and pedestrian traffic in the area where the grab fell.

The Port Authority reported that experts from the Port Captaincy were dispatched to the site to “investigate the circumstances and support the opening of the Administrative Inquiry into Navigation Accidents and Incidents (IAFN).” The military organization also said it deeply regretted the incident and expressed solidarity with the victim’s family and colleagues.

APS further stated that the case was registered at the 7th Police Precinct (DP) of Santos, and the investigation is under the jurisdiction of the Brazilian Navy. A Tribuna contacted the São Paulo State Public Security Secretariat (SSP-SP) for further information and is awaiting a response.
