After announcing the start of construction for the Ponta Negra Terminals (TPN), also known as Porto de Jaconé, for the first half of 2025, the mayor of Maricá, Washington Quaquá (PT), has now provided a revised forecast for the project’s commencement: January 2026.

The port project has been ongoing for more than 15 years, facing numerous environmental challenges. Recently, a technical report from the State Institute of the Environment (Inea) recommended rejecting the environmental license, though that recommendation may or may not be followed.

According to the report, 25 endangered species are expected to be affected by the project—nine of them in the “Endangered (EN)” category, facing a high risk of extinction in the wild. Most of the listed species are plants, but records also include lizards and rodents. The report further emphasized that the area’s vegetation plays a crucial role in protecting water sources and controlling erosion.

The government’s expectation is that the project, with an estimated investment of R$1.5 billion, will become one of the largest port terminals in the country, generating around 13,000 direct and indirect jobs. Maricá’s mayor, Washington Quaquá, had already expressed interest in making the municipality a partner in the port, contributing about R$500 million from the Sovereign Fund to the project—now possible through Maricá Global Invest S.A., a company created specifically to channel oil royalty resources into boosting the city’s economic development.

The Porto de Jaconé project envisions a logistics platform focused on exports, with an emphasis on sustainability and innovation, as well as the creation of an Export Processing Zone (ZPE) to attract industries and stimulate regional growth.
