Driven by a significant increase in poultry production, China’s meat sector recorded a 3.8% growth in volume over the first nine months of 2025, according to government data. As a result, imports fell sharply.

A broader economic analysis shows that in the third quarter of 2025, the world’s second-largest economy grew by approximately 5%. The figure may seem high, but it is the most concerning of the year, as weak domestic demand is making China increasingly dependent on export growth.

The result keeps the country on track to meet its growth targets for the current year. However, given not only weak external demand but also trade tensions with the United States, economists are already questioning whether the current performance is sustainable.
