VLI moves record 285,000 tonnes of fertilizers in a single month at Tiplam

VLI — the logistics company that operates railways, ports, and terminals — recorded in September the highest monthly volume of fertilizer import cargo ever unloaded at its Luiz Antonio Mesquita Integrated Port Terminal (Tiplam). A total of 285,000 tonnes was discharged from markets such as North America, the Middle East, and China, destined for major agricultural production hubs in Brazil, including Goiás, Minas Gerais, and Mato Grosso. VLI is the largest rail transporter of fertilizers in the country, handling 90% of sulfur, phosphate rock, and ammonia flows.

Tiplam serves as the import and export gateway for VLI’s Southeast Corridor, which spans states such as Goiás, Minas Gerais, and São Paulo. To maximize this operational capacity, the company completed, in May, the deepening of the terminal berths, enabling it to handle larger vessels. One outcome was the recent operation of the largest single-vessel fertilizer input cargo in the terminal’s history, at 72,600 tonnes.

In addition to the Southeast Corridor, VLI transports fertilizer inputs along two other key logistics corridors: the East Corridor, which connects the Triângulo Mineiro region to the Espírito Santo port system via the Centro-Atlântica Railway, controlled by the company, and the Vitória-Minas Railway, where VLI is in the process of transitioning to operations as a Rail Freight Transport Agent (ATF-C); and the Northern Corridor, which connects Tocantins to the Port of São Luís (MA) via the northern section of the North-South Railway, also operated by VLI, and the Carajás Railway, where VLI trains operate under trackage rights.
