Between January and September 2025, Brazil recorded significant growth in exports of tobacco and manufactured tobacco products. According to official data, export revenue for the sector reached US$2.3 billion, up from US$2.03 billion in the same period of 2024 — an increase of approximately 16%. The result reflects not only the recovery of traditional markets but also the expansion into new international destinations.
Belgium remained the largest importer of Brazilian tobacco, with purchases totaling US$549.2 million — an increase of 2.5% compared with 2024 — and shipments totaling 97.8 million kilograms, consolidating its position as a European distribution hub. China also posted a strong performance, importing US$325.4 million (+7.9%) and 33.5 million kilograms, reflecting rising demand for manufactured tobacco products in Asia. Another standout market was Indonesia, which nearly doubled its imports from US$106.4 million in 2024 to US$193.2 million in 2025, totaling 26.1 million kilograms, highlighting Brazil’s growing presence in Southeast Asia.
Other countries with notable increases include Vietnam, with US$92.3 million in purchases (+10.4%), the United Arab Emirates, which imported US$91.8 million (+37.7%), and Switzerland, which saw a 228% surge, reaching US$67.5 million. The strong performance reflects both the recognized quality of Brazilian tobacco and a commercial strategy focused on diversifying buyers and promoting higher-value products.

Despite overall growth, some markets recorded declines in imports. The United States — the second-largest buyer in 2024 — reduced purchases from US$219.6 million to US$175.8 million, a drop of nearly 20%, while Egypt posted an even steeper decrease, from US$102.1 million to US$23.8 million, down 76.7%. Analysts point to regulatory changes, fiscal policy shifts, and currency fluctuations as key drivers of these variations.
In volume terms, Belgium, Indonesia, and the United States together account for more than 60% of Brazil’s total exported kilograms, while smaller markets such as Japan, Palau, and Tonga — though low in value — illustrate the broad global reach of Brazilian tobacco.
The tobacco sector in Brazil, traditionally concentrated in southern states, remains an important generator of export revenue and contributes positively to the country’s agricultural trade surplus. The growth observed in 2025 reinforces Brazil’s position as a major global player, expanding its presence in strategic markets and capturing new customers for higher-value manufactured products.
With continued consolidation in markets like Belgium, China, and Indonesia, and increased sales to the Middle East and Europe, the sector sees optimistic prospects for the remainder of 2025 — especially in premium tobacco and high-end manufactured products, which enjoy stronger acceptance in demanding international markets.
