U.S. Senate votes to overturn Trump’s tariff on Brazil

The United States Senate, controlled by Republicans, approved on Tuesday legislation to revoke the tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump on Brazil, in a move that defies guidance from Vice President J.D. Vance.
Five Republican senators joined all Democratic senators to advance the resolution, which challenges Trump’s use of emergency powers to implement a 50% tariff against Brazil in July.
The decision came even after Vance urged Republican lawmakers not to vote against Trump’s measures during a closed-door lunch held the same day.
“Voting against this is stripping the President of the United States of this incredible leverage. I think it is a huge mistake, and I know that most people in the room agree with me,” Vance said.
Despite Senate approval, the resolution — led by Democratic Senator Tim Kaine — is expected to remain stalled in the House of Representatives until early next year. This is because House Republicans recently adopted a rule preventing the chamber from considering legislation related to Trump’s tariffs before January.
This is the first of three tariff-related bills expected to come to the Senate floor this week, with votes anticipated in the coming days on measures to end Trump’s tariffs on Canada and his tariffs against other countries around the world.
